When David and Tracey Banowetz moved to Baton Rouge in 1995 and decided to build a new home, it also meant starting a new garden from scratch. This gave them the opportunity to further their "budding" interest in native plants and wildlife gardening. With a new understanding of the importance of backyard ecology to restoring the natural landscape, their goal was to restore a small part of the natural habitat that had been impacted by the construction of their subdivision.

During the five years the couple lived in Baton Rouge, their garden provided food and shelter for over 70 species of birds; 16 different types of butterflies; a variety of turtles and frogs; raccoons, rabbits, and even the occasional red fox. During the winter of 1999/2000, their garden was the winter home for at least eight Rufous and Allens hummingbirds.

Their presentation at the 2007 Hummingbird Festival is based on the pictorial documentation they made throughout the course of the project. In this case study, David and Tracey will explain what they did and how you can do the same.

David and Tracey's experience in Baton Rouge only increased their enthusiasm for native gardening. In September 2000, they moved to West Feliciana parish in order to protect and preserve native habitat on a larger scale.
